A neighborhood story written one book at a time.
Three small chapters that brought us to today.
Nestled in the heart of Milwaukie, Oregon, Clackamas Book Exchange has been a beloved community treasure for nearly five decades. Since 1981, book lovers of all ages have wandered through our shelves, discovering hidden gems, trading beloved reads, and building connections over shared stories.
On June 7, 2024, a new chapter began. With fresh eyes and deep respect for the store's rich history, our new owners stepped in — bringing renewed energy, modern touches, and the same heartfelt commitment to this community.
In 2026, we'll proudly unveil our new identity: To Be Read (TBR) — a name that captures the magic of that towering, exciting stack of books always waiting on your nightstand.
Clackamas Book Exchange opens its doors and quickly becomes a local haven for readers.
Generations of readers wander our stacks, swap stories, and turn the shop into a community living room.
New owners step in with fresh energy and deep respect for everything that made the shop special.

We run a friendly trade-credit shop — bring books in, take new ones home with credit toward the trade.
NO CASH GIVEN FOR BOOKS!
We operate on a trade credit system. Books cannot be dropped off, so you must wait while we review your stack due to limited storage capacity. Credit expires every year on Dec 31, so make sure to use it.
Of the book's original list price
in store credit on any book we're able to take.
Of the list price deducted
from your credit on any book you're purchasing.
A swap fee per book applies as follows, based on list price:
Without credit, books are priced at 50% of the list price unless otherwise marked with our store sticker.
If you already have credit, we stop accepting books for trade on Nov 1 each year so we can catch up on inventory and give people time to use their credit.
Credit is capped at $200, and you must spend it down below $200 before accumulating more.
A friendly heads-up:Even when your books meet all of our trade requirements, there's a small chance we already have plenty of copies of a particular title. If we can't take a book today, please don't take it personally — our shelves change all the time, so you're always welcome to bring it back another time.
Tick what applies and we'll let you know if your stack is a good fit.
Whether you prefer scrolling from the couch or wandering between shelves, we've got you covered.
Every title here is on our shelves right now — newly traded in and ready to take home. Bring books of your own and earn store credit toward whatever catches your eye.
We just rebuilt the cookbook section from the ground up — world cuisines, celebrity chefs, baking, grilling, healthy living, and a drinks corner you can actually browse.
We host small, cozy moments throughout the year — here's what's on right now.

Correct — we operate as a trade-credit shop. Books cannot be dropped off, so you must wait while we review your stack due to limited storage capacity. Credit is store credit only (not cash). Credit expires every year on Dec 31, so make sure to use it.
You receive 25% of the book's original list price as store credit on books we accept. When you purchase with credit, 50% of the list price comes off your credit plus a small swap fee ($1–$3). Credit is capped at $200, and you must spend it down below $200 before accumulating more. If you already have credit, we stop accepting books for trade on Nov 1 each year so we can catch up on inventory and give people time to use their credit.
