How to choose your next book (and beat decision paralysis)

4 min read

There’s a particular kind of stuck familiar to every reader: a full shelf, a free evening, and absolutely no idea what to pick. Choosing your next book shouldn’t feel like a chore. Here’s how we help people land on the right one — without the twenty-minute stare-down at the shelf.

Start with your mood, not the “best” book

The right book is the one that matches where you are right now. Ask yourself what you’re actually in the mood for: comfort or challenge? Fast and plotty, or slow and immersive? Funny, romantic, eerie, or escapist? The objectively “great” novel you’re not in the mood for will just sit there. Follow the feeling first.

Narrow before you choose

Decision paralysis comes from too many options, not too few. So shrink the field. Pull three or four books that fit your mood, line them up, and choose only among those. A small shortlist is far easier than the whole shelf — and once you’ve committed, stop second-guessing and start reading.

Read the first page

When you’re torn between a couple of finalists, let the writing decide. Read the opening page of each. The one whose voice makes you want to keep going is your answer. You’ll usually feel the pull within a paragraph or two — trust it.

Use the “if you liked” trick

One of the most reliable ways to choose is to start from a book you already loved and look for its cousins — same mood, same energy, different story. If a recent favorite knocked you flat, chase that feeling. It’s how readers find their next obsession, and it almost never disappoints.

Lean on staff picks and recommendations

After forty-five years, we’ve learned that a good recommendation beats any algorithm. Tell us what you last loved and we’ll point you somewhere — that’s half the joy of an indie shop. Staff shelves and curated lists like our book club favorites exist precisely to do the narrowing for you.

Let the Matchmaker do the heavy lifting

When you really can’t decide, describe a book you loved — or just the vibe you’re after — to our Next Read Matchmaker. It takes your taste and turns it into concrete suggestions, which is exactly the kind of narrowing that breaks decision paralysis. Think of it as a knowledgeable bookseller who never gets tired of the question.

Once you’ve got a title in mind, come find it on the shelf in Milwaukie or browse online. And if you’re hoping to read more of them this year, our guides to reading more books and fun reading challenges are good next stops.
